Some valid, most not on the NHTSA reports for the ‘19 Ascent

I've had my '19 Subaru Ascent Premium since new and dealt with the battery issue early on, which Subaru addressed through a TSB. I recently browsed the NHTSA complaint database and while some entries are legitimate, others feel more like venting than safety reporting. Windshield cracks from road debris aren't a defect, and rust on trim is a dealer-level issue, not a federal one. That said, I know manufacturers do monitor NHTSA complaints closely to catch patterns that might not show up in warranty data right away. So while the system matters, I still think some owners misuse it for one-off problems that could be resolved through normal service channels.

I've got a 2020 Ascent Limited too. Bought it used last year for family road trips. Had the battery problem early on, but the fix from Subaru worked well. I look at NHTSA sometimes to learn about common problems, but yeah, some complaints just sound like people venting. Still, it's useful when the same issue shows up a lot. Helps us catch things before they get worse.

I think we're on the same page regarding how the NHTSA database can be both useful and noisy. Like you, I experienced the battery issue early on and had it resolved through the TSB, so I know firsthand how Subaru tracks patterns and responds when there's sufficient volume. The challenge arises when scattered complaints are lumped in with actual safety risks, which can muddy the waters for owners trying to identify real trends. Out of curiosity, did your fix involve the battery sensor update or a full replacement? If you've had any other issues crop up since then, it'd be good to compare notes before the warranty window closes.
